Guide to PMP Certification Process

The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is for project managers as an industry-recognized credential. The certification holder demonstrates the education, skill work experience and the competency needed to lead projects.

PMP Certification requirements:

·          Applicant must have a Secondary Diploma with 7,500 hours of leading & directing projects with 35 hours of documented Project Management education
                                                                   OR
·         have a Four-year degree with 4,500 hours of leading & directing program and 35 hours of documented Project Management education


5-step application process:

1.       Apply at official PMI website.
2.       Pay the PMP Application fee.
3.       Submit Audit Documents and schedule PMP examination.
4.       Appear the examination and pass the PMP Certification exam.
5.       Earn the PMP credentials (earn PDUs).

Visit PMBOK guides to get a standard terminology and guidelines for project management. Post preparation, if you want to check your progress, PMP exam simulator and mock tests help you to evaluate yourself. On average, it takes around 2-3 months to prepare and attain certification. It is again, recommended to take the Project Management Professional (PMP) training from a PMI approved institute.

10 knowledge areas and 5 processes are defined in the PMBOK 6:

·         Planning.
·         Initiating.
·         Executing.
·         Monitoring & Controlling.
·         Closing.

Guides and tutorials definitely help but project management training is must to clear the examination. The examination is for 4 hours and features 200 multiple choice questions. Attending PMP workshops, Project Management training, seminars, and other PMP Courses are also always a bonus.

There are two ways to take the PMP Certification exam:

·         Computer-based: $405 for PMI members and $555 for non-members.
·         Paper-based: $250 for PMI members and $400 for non-members.
